As China’s first satellite terminal, and the largest in the world, the Shanghai PuDong Terminal project was a massive opportunity. The competition for this project was made up of just three elements: a scale model, a book covering the design details, and a 30 min video explaining the story behind the design submission as well as the vision for the new terminal.

This project had unique challenges form the beginning. Because there was just three months for the entire competition, we had to be developing the story and motion elements while the architects were still fleshing out their look and design intent. This also gave us the extraordinary chance to act as a sounding board for them as they were developing their final design. It also meant we were able to tie visual elements between the video and the book by using similar graphic styles, icons, etc., giving the submission a cohesive feel. As one of the largest aviation projects in the world, there were so many details that had to be figured out and then told in a cohesive, engaging story. And as the final cut was in Mandarin, we had to make sure the story was going to be engaging across cultural boundaries.

In the end, despite competing against some of the best international architecture firms in the world, our submission won the competition.
